Kung Lao is a Shaolin Monk hand picked by the Thunder God Raiden to help the fight for Earthrealm in the battle against the darkened realm Outworld.  He trained his whole life in the same temple that Liu Kang trained in.  And was one of the first members of the White Lotus Society, an order of skilled monks formed by Raiden to stand up against evil.  His and Liu Kang's ancestor, the Great Kung Lao as they called him was the first victor of Earthrealm to win Mortal Kombat.  Shang Tsung had Goro kill Kung Lao's descendant.  Because the Elder Gods(which are the kind of like the "watchers" of the realms) made it so that Kung Lao could not age until the next Mortal Kombat tournament was fought.  However he could still be killed.  Shang Tsung knew that the Great Kung Lao was no match for Goro.  So Goro killed him in battle and became the supreme champion of Mortal Kombat until Liu Kang defeated him and Shang Tsung 1,000 years later.  Kung Lao is fighting for his ancestor and other ancestors he's learned over the years of training in the Temple of the Order of Light in China.  Though Raiden did not let Kung Lao appear in the 10th Mortal Kombat tournament, he did anyways.  But it had it not been for Kung Lao, the Earthrealm warriors would've never made it off of Shang Tsung's Island(an outpost between Earthrealm and Outworld), before it crumbled into the endless sea.  When the emperor of Outworld, Shao Kahn found that Shang Tsung had been defeated, he was enraged that he could not invade Earthrealm as planned.  As Shang Tsung pleaded for his life and his emperor's forgiveness, he came up with a brilliant idea.  Lead the Earthrealm warriors to Outworld so that they could be destroyed easier.  Shang Tsung's plan had also backfired in this situation.  With Kung Lao at the Earthrealm warriors' side, the Earthrealm warriors defeated Shao Kahn's minions and killed Shang Tsung.  Kung Lao was pleased that his ancestors could rest more peacefully due to the treachery of Shao Kahn in the rules of Mortal Kombat over the years, but Shao Kahn was not to be through with Earthrealm, his invasion had only just begun and Kung Lao was a marked target, along with all of the Earthrealm warriors.  Once Raiden had exposed the truth to the chosen warriors of Earthrealm, Kung Lao knew he must take action once again.  His ancestors would never be freed if Shao Kahn wasn't defeated.  Kung Lao now decides on whether taking the risk is worth the cost, Shao Kahn was more powerful this time around then last.  Raiden convinces Kung Lao that his only hope of making his ancestors proud was to help the Earthrealm defeat Shao Kahn and his extermination squads.
